This is an easy to use guide on considering what your property and financial settlement might look like. You could use this to propose an agreement to your former partner and save time and money on negotiating through lawyers. It is also a great resource to allow you to prepare yourself for an initial appointment with us to discuss your settlement. Hot tip: our legal practice director used this to negotiate her settlement once upon a time and well before she was a family lawyer herself!
Head over to the court website for all things Family Law in Australia. The site is full of useful information, kept simple and clear, and supporting handouts and links to other resources for when you are ready to delve deeper into the ‘how to’ of sorting out your family law matters. We recommend clients looking through the site just to get familiar with what we are talking about. Knowledge is power. We love empowering you, so go check it out!
Although JP Family Law & Mediation love helping people get that final Divorce Order (by the time you get there, you are ready for that piece of paper, I promise!) the court website can step you through doing this yourself. It can save you in legal expenses and, as long as you follow their steps in full, and seek guidance from the lovely people that work for the court, you should be able to navigate it without too much drama. You’ve had enough of that already.
We advocate for counselling and therapeutic support for all our clients, and their children as needed. Accessing information for your mental health and wellbeing is part of the separation journey, and is just as important (if not moreso) than the legal and financial work that must be done alongside it. At JP Family Law & Mediation, we know our clients need to be in the right frame of mind to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. So check this one out too.
If you are experiencing domestic or family violence, your first port of call, often before a family lawyer, will be an organisation that can assist you through the practical steps of leaving an abusive relationship. These brilliant services will step you through safety planning and preparing for a safe exit from the household, or guide you on other ways to have the perpetrator ousted from the home where appropriate. Please make these organisations one of your top priorities to contact, so that we can all work together to support you out of a difficult situation.
If you are not sure you are financially able to engage a private family lawyer like us, head over to Legal Aid or the Women’s Legal Service, and ask for their assistance first and foremost. Both organisations play a vital and invaluable role in supporting those most vulnerable in our communities, and can be particularly helpful in matters involving children and domestic violence. At JP Family Law & Mediation, we volunteer our time regularly to the Women’s Legal Service to provide consultations by phone without cost, and our legal practice director, Jess, is preparing to become an Independent Children’s Lawyer which operates via Legal Aid. So visit these sites and see if they can assist you too.
