JP Family Law & Mediation

JP Family Law & Mediation was established in October 2021 by Legal Practice Director, Jess Purcell.

Coming from a background in family, domestic violence and child protection law, Jess wanted to create a remote service that could offer tailored and flexible support for clients, with the aim of developing innovative and improved approaches to benefit the families going through relationship breakdown and separation.

With a Master of Laws in Applied Law (Family Law & Family Dispute Resolution), and further training as a Collaborative Practitioner, Jess is determined to facilitate alternate pathways to resolving family law disputes with a vision that – one day – these issues will be better and more appropriately resolved without the intrusion of lawyers and courts.

Having always been drawn to the ‘human’ areas of law, Jess realised that her passion wasn’t about the law but, rather, about helping the people caught up in it. The further she delved into the factors underpinning the issues faced in family law, domestic violence matters, and child protection cases, it became clear that the law was not the answer. It was merely a mechanism to help reach it.

An incidental benefit Jess has seen in moving away from traditional practice styles is that she has been able to be transparent about her role as a mother, and her humanity in general. Although this obviously provides great benefits to her in having the understanding of her clients when ‘life’ happens, it has similarly supported her in building better rapport and stronger relationships with clients who are enduring the same challenges.

It is a huge privilege to be in the role of legal advisor through a client’s separation. At JP Family Law & Mediation, we never forget this. We are here for you, we’ve ‘got you’, and we want to make this process as easy on you as possible. You have enough challenges to face right now – we don’t need to be one of them!

Legal Practice Director, Jess Purcell

Jess established JP Family Law & Mediation in October 2021, having began as a commercial paralegal in 2008 and being finally admitted as a lawyer in 2017.

Having worked in family law, domestic violence and child protection, Jess decided to make good use of her maternity leave by completing a Masters in Applied Laws majoring in Family Law and Family Dispute Resolution (and she looked after her baby too, don’t worry!) and created JPFLM with a view to building a practice that offered a legal service in a less traditional way.
What sets Jess apart from many other lawyers is that she has managed to cram a lifetime of personal and professional experience into a short amount of time, providing her with insight that allows her to support you through your difficult times.

Having worked in social security and child protection, Jess has additional training in mental health, substance misuse and domestic violence, and is due to complete training as an Independent Children’s Lawyer to act in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.

Outside of work, Jess would love to have some free time but is presently mum to a high energy IVF miracle dude, wife to a similar high energy dude from South Africa, spends a lot of time outside with those two and her menagerie of animals (including a pig) and would probably live in the pool if this were an option. She also lives with Crohn’s Disease which has been one of the biggest challenges in her life to date but also a huge motivator for where she is today.
